The story of coral commenced several hundred years ago. Past records indicate that corals were used in jewelry designs for several centuries. In centuries past, man's desire for coral was not just for its physical beauty but also due to the thought that this stone had useful metaphysical powers. Populations of old said that coral was a positive object and shielded the wearer from bad happenings. They convinced themselves that wearing a coral amulet prevented disease related to the skin. Some also believed that when a sick person saw visions of coral, it showed that he or she had turned the corner and was recovering. This gem also has ties to Greek mythology. Legends claim that Perseus challenged and anhilated the the ocean monster. As the blood of the sea monster mixed with the water, it became coral. Citizens of ancient Rome claimed that coral was a symbol of protection and was commonly taken by legionaries into war. Romans also said that this gemstone could help save someone from the harm inflicted by scorpion stings. Others said that a change in color of the stone pointed to a improvement in the mental condition of the wearer.
The tale of the formation of coral is equally enthralling in its own right. Coral and freshwater pearls are the only gems that have an "organic" basis in that they are generated by lifeforms. As opposed to coral and pearls, all other gems known to man are not organic in nature and were often produced by geologic forces of temperature. Small sea organisms called polyps create coral reefs. The skeletal remains of these organisms agglomerate together and create calcium structures that we know as coral. Coral formations sometimes grow over a period of several decades and polyps continue to add to the reef during this time. Often, the stems of the formation can grow to more than two inches in diameter. Coral pieces of this size however are rare.
There are numerous of species of polyps in the oceans that can create coral. Interestingly, only coral formed by the polyp corallicum is preferred for costume jewelry production. The startling red coral made by corallicum rubrum polyp is a prized gem for costume jewelry designs. Corals are highly sensitive to sunlight. Usually, coral reefs do well in warmer waters. Hence, it comes as no surprise that quality coral for fine jewelry making is grown in the warmer waters of the Mediterranean Sea and off the Pacific coasts of Japan and Taiwan. Black coral found off the Central American Coasts is probably the most cherished form of coral. The Mexican formations have been almost depleted over the years and only insignificant quantities of High Quality Black coral can now be found.
Coral that is harvested from the sea bed must be processed before it can be slated for costume jewelry. Divers manually get coral from the ocean floor. After being brought to the surface, the coral are thoroughly observed and sorted based on quality. Pieces of coral that have the least flaws are the much sought after, although specimens of mediocre quality are also used in costume jewelry. Most specimens are stabilized prior to being used in jewelry. The processing may include infusion with resin, or bleaching to create white coral, or dying to improve the color of the specimen. The specimen is then cut and polished and either drilled for stringing, or mounted in metal settings to create the beautiful sterling pendants and other coral jewelry that we know and love today.
