Tengu: Japan's Big Nosed Goblin-God by David Hurley
Tengu is a demon-god who inhabits the remote forests and mountains of Japan. You will easily recognize the most common Tengu by his red face and long red nose, his bushy eyebrows and beard.
The characters that make up the work Tengu mean "heaven" + "dog" which is derived from the Chinese Tiangou or "heaven-dogs". This is rather surprising because when Tengu first appeared in Japanese folk law he had an avian beak and feathers. With the emergence of the red-faced long-nosed Tengu, the former bird-like version was relegated to the lower status "karasu Tengu" or "crow Tengu".
Tengu wears a cloak and wooden "geta" sandals. Geta usually have two wooden "teeth" placed across the soles to raise them above the ground. However, the tengu's geta are famous for having just a single wooden tooth so Tengu has to balance precariously on them.
Tengu fans himself with the eight-fingered leaf of a yatsude tree and the fan helps him to keep his balance on his geta. The yatsude leaf also helps tengu to fly and has other magical properties such as making noses grow or shrink in size...
Tengu is noted for playing tricks on people and can also be dangerous. Even so, in some agricultural areas of Japan Tengu is seen as a protective deity. Tengu is often celebrated in festivals around Japan.
An essential item in a Tengu festival is a Tengu mask. The most famous Tengu masks are those of Fukushima prefecture.
The most common Tengu mask has a red face and long wooden nose. Some masks are also decorated with coarse hair to represent Tengu's beard and eyebrows. In some cases the phallic suggestiveness of the nose is reinforced by the shape of the nostrils or the chin which may be carved into a scrotum-like shape.
One other Tengu mask design that you often see is a representation of the crow-headed "Karasu Tengu". In this case the mask mask is painted in black, red and gold (depending on the style of the craftsman) and has a prominent beak.
How much does a Tengu mask cost?
The price varies depending on the materials used and the quality of craftsmanship, but for a genuine Japanese wooden Tengu mask the price will vary from $50 to $500. The cost of an antique mask will be much higher.
In the twentieth century Tengu became associated with a "hanafuda" playing card deck produced by the famous Japanese game manufacturer, Nintendo, the so called "Tengu Hanafuda" deck. The hanafuda deck comes in a box with a picture of Tengu's face on the top. The picture of Tengu is suggestive of a play on words. Hanafuda means flower-card in English. "Hana" means flower, but the word "hana" also means "nose" and in the days when gambling with hanafuda cards was illegal, the way to show that you wanted to gamble was to rub your nose, which reminded people of the tengu demon-gods.
Tengu are noted for their haughtiness and one tradition maintains that tengu are the spirits of people who were proud or arrogant when they were alive. One way of showing that someone is being arrogant is to bunch your fist and stick it on the end of your nose in imitation of Tengu.
There are a lot of stories in which Tengu and humans try to outwit each other and in many cases it is Tengu who is shown up to be the foolish party. In one such story, a boy looks through a bamboo tube and tells Tengu he can see faraway places. Tengu wants to look and swaps his cloak for the stick. The boy puts on the cloak, disappears and causes mischief.
Finally, one story tells of how the tengu first arrived in Japan in an open boat. The story may allude to the first shocking encounter with European sailors who may well have arrived with sunburnt faces and - to Japanese eyes - very big noses. Could the big nosed ruddy-faced tengu have been an early European traveller to Japan?
Whatever his origins, Tengu is a long established, well loved and celebrated part of Japanese folk tradition.
